
Beginners Guide to Night Photography Camera Settings
Night photography can look intimidating at first. Low light makes autofocus less reliable, camera shake more obvious and exposure settings less predictable. The good news is that you do not need complicated equipment or perfect settings to get started. Once you understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together, you can approach dark scenes methodically instead of guessing.
Start with the Right Shooting Mode
Manual modegives you the most control at night. You can choose the aperture, shutter speed and ISO independently, which makes it easier to create consistent exposures across a series of images.

Check the result carefully, because the camera may choose a speed that is too slow for a handheld shot or too long for moving subjects.
Whatever mode you use, treat the first frame as a test. Night scenes vary greatly depending on nearby lights, the brightness of the sky, reflections and the amount of movement in the scene.
The Three Core Night Photography Settings
Aperture: Control Light and Depth of Field
Aperture controls the size of the opening inside the lens. A wide aperture, represented by a low f-number such as f/1.8 or f/2.8, lets in more light. This can help with handheld photography, portraits at night and astrophotography.
- f/1.4 to f/2.8:Useful when light is scarce or when you want a shallow depth of field.
- f/4 to f/8:A practical range for cityscapes, buildings and scenes where you want more of the frame to appear sharp.
- f/11 and narrower:Useful for creating starburst effects around streetlights, although it requires a longer exposure or higher ISO.
The widest aperture is not always the sharpest option. Many lenses produce cleaner corners and fewer optical imperfections when stopped down slightly. If your lens opens to f/1.8, try comparing it with f/2.8 or f/4. The best choice depends on your subject and the lens itself.
Remember that aperture also changes depth of field. At a wide aperture, a nearby subject may be sharp while the background falls out of focus. For a cityscape where you want foreground and distant buildings sharp, a narrower aperture may be more suitable.
Shutter Speed: Freeze Movement or Create Motion
Shutter speeddetermines how long the sensor records light. It also controls how movement appears in the final image.
- About 1/60 second or faster:Often suitable for handheld scenes, depending on your focal length, image stabilisation and subject movement.
- One to 30 seconds:Useful for tripod-based cityscapes, illuminated buildings, traffic trails and reflections.
- Several minutes or longer:Suitable for creative light painting and some star-trail images.
A long shutter speed can make a dark scene bright without forcing the ISO very high, but it cannot freeze moving subjects. People, vehicles, tree branches and water may become blurred. That blur can be a problem or an important part of the image, depending on your intention.
For a tripod-mounted cityscape, you might begin at f/5.6, ISO 400 and 10 seconds. This is only a starting point, not a universal formula. If the image is too dark, lengthen the shutter speed, open the aperture or raise the ISO. If highlights are clipped, shorten the shutter speed, lower the ISO or narrow the aperture.
For stars, a wide aperture and a shutter speed short enough to prevent obvious star trails are usually preferred. The suitable time depends on focal length, sensor size, the direction you are facing and how much movement you are willing to accept. Test the image at full size rather than relying on a single rule.
ISO: Brightness with a Trade-Off
ISOchanges how strongly the camera amplifies the recorded signal. Raising it can make a dark image brighter, but it usually increases visible noise and reduces the flexibility available when editing shadows and highlights.
- ISO 100 to 400:A good choice for tripod work when there is enough light or when a long exposure is practical.
- ISO 800 to 1600:Often useful for handheld urban scenes and moving subjects.
- ISO 3200 and above:Helpful when you need a faster shutter speed or are photographing stars, but noise becomes more apparent.
These ranges are only general guidance. Sensor design, image size, exposure accuracy and your tolerance for noise all make a difference. A correctly exposed image at a higher ISO can look better than an underexposed image taken at a low ISO and heavily brightened later.
When using a tripod, start with a low ISO and adjust the shutter speed first. When photographing a moving subject handheld, a higher ISO may be the most sensible compromise.
Supporting Camera Settings
Shoot in RAW
If your camera offers it, useRAWfor night photography. RAW files retain more processing information than JPEG files, giving you greater control over white balance, shadow recovery and noise reduction during editing. They also take up more storage space and need to be processed before sharing.
Choose a Suitable White Balance
Streetlights can produce strong yellow, orange, green or blue colour casts. Auto white balance may change from frame to frame, especially in a scene with several types of artificial lighting.
For consistent results, try a fixed white balance. A warmer light source may suit a setting around 3000K to 3500K, while a mixed urban scene may look more natural at a higher setting. The correct value depends on the lights in the scene and your creative preference. If you shoot RAW, you can change white balance later without being locked into the setting used in camera.
Focus Carefully
Autofocus may work well near bright signs, streetlights and illuminated buildings, but it can struggle with dark subjects and empty areas of sky. If autofocus hunts or repeatedly fails to lock, switch tomanual focus.
Use live view and magnify a bright, distant detail. For stars, magnify a bright star or distant light and adjust the focus ring until it becomes as small and defined as possible. The infinity mark on a lens is a useful starting point but is not always exact.
After focusing, avoid touching the focus ring. Check focus again if you change focal length, move the camera or alter the lens position.
Use a Stable Setup
A sturdy tripod is extremely useful for exposures longer than you can comfortably handhold. Place it on firm ground, keep the centre column low when possible and avoid extending the legs farther than necessary. Hang a camera bag from the tripod only if it does not swing in the wind.
Use a remote release, a phone app or the camera’stwo-second self-timerto prevent movement when pressing the shutter. If your camera has image stabilisation, check the manual before leaving it on during tripod work. Some systems manage this automatically, while others can introduce movement when there is no camera shake to correct.
A Simple Starting Recipe
Use the following process for a tripod-mounted cityscape or illuminated building:
- Compose the scene and secure the camera on a tripod.
- Set the camera toManual mode.
- Choose an aperture aroundf/5.6as a starting point.
- Set ISO to400or another low value.
- Begin with a shutter speed of10 seconds.
- Focus using magnified live view, then switch to manual focus if necessary.
- Use a remote release or the two-second self-timer.
- Review the image and histogram, then adjust the exposure.
Open the aperture or raise ISO if you need more brightness. Lengthen the shutter speed if the subject is static and you want to keep noise low. Shorten the shutter speed if moving highlights are too blurred or bright.
Check the Histogram and Highlights
The camera screen can make a night image look brighter or darker than it really is, especially when viewed in a dark environment. Use the histogram and highlight warning as additional checks.
A histogram pushed hard against the left side may indicate blocked shadows, although a night image can naturally contain large dark areas. More importantly, watch for important highlights pressed against the right side. Bright signs, lamps and reflections can lose detail quickly. If they are clipped, reduce the exposure and consider making the surrounding shadows brighter during editing.
Prepare for a Night Shoot
Low temperatures can reduce battery life, so carry a charged spare and keep it somewhere protected from the cold. Bring a small torch with a dim or red-light setting so you can adjust equipment without ruining your night vision. Check the weather, protect your camera from rain and allow cold equipment to acclimatise gradually when you return indoors to reduce condensation.
Night locations also demand extra awareness. Keep equipment close, avoid blocking paths and be careful around roads, water and uneven ground. A successful photograph is not worth taking unnecessary risks.
Keep Experimenting
There is no single perfect night photography setting. A quiet architecture scene may need a low ISO and long exposure, while a moving performer may require a wide aperture, fast shutter speed and high ISO. Weather, moonlight, artificial lighting and the subject itself can change the best approach.
Choose one nearby location and photograph it with different combinations of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Compare the results at full size and make notes about what changed. With a stable setup, careful focus and a willingness to take test frames, night photography becomes far more manageable—and much more creative.
